Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)

Pediatric Patient with Laughing Gas for DentistryWhat is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous Oxide is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe.

Nitrous Oxide has been the primary means of sedation in pediatric dentistry for many years. Nitrous oxide is safe, the patient receives 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide.

While under nitrous oxide, the patient is able to breathe on their own and remain in control of all bodily functions. The patient may experience mild amnesia and may fall asleep, not remembering all of what happened during their appointment.

This treatment is a popular option for our pediatric patients who might need necessary dental treatment. Parents often choose this comforting option to other alternatives in pediatric dentistry

Reasons to not use Nitrous Oxide

Dr. Gloria with patientAs parents ourselves, we understand your concerns for putting your child under full sedation with other type of medication.

There are no major contraindications to using nitrous oxide. But you may not want to use it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing.

It is very important that if your child has any underlying medical condition, you or the guardian must communicate the patient’s health status to your doctor at Parklane Dental.

How will my child respond?

Every patient has unique dental health specific to them!

You may want to ask your dentist for a “5 minute trial” to see how you feel with this type of sedation method before proceeding!

This might not be available to all patients, as the patient must be a candidate for nitrous oxide first.

There are many advantages to using Nitrous Oxide

If you have a preference or if the primary care provider recommends a treatment, we are more than happy to provide the best option for your patient.
