Bonding

Bonding is an alternative to veneers, and can be used as a restorative procedure for teeth that are chipped, cracked, discolored or misarranged.

How does it work?

The tooth is prepared for the procedure by lightly etching the surface and applying a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, a plastic resin is applied and sculpted into the desired shape by the dentist. Once set, the resin is trimmed, smoothed and polished to a natural appearance.

Considerations

Smile makeover photos - implant, veneer, compositeThe bonding procedure can often be completed in a single office visit, and can improve the appearance of a tooth significantly.

This treatment is often used for minor touch-up or for focus on one tooth as part of our Smile Makeover process. Our doctors can add a natural look to any tooth with bonding.

However, since the plastic resin used is not as strong as your natural tooth enamel, it is more likely to stain, chip or break than natural teeth. Bonding typically lasts three to five years before need of repair.

Bonding FAQ

Is bonding better than veneers?
Bonding is a more conservative and affordable option for small cosmetic changes, while veneers are typically stronger and better for more dramatic smile transformations.

Can I whiten my bonded teeth later?
No. Bonding material does not respond to whitening treatments, so it’s best to whiten your natural teeth before getting bonding.

Can bonding close gaps between teeth?
Yes! Bonding is often used to close small gaps and improve the shape and symmetry of teeth.

Can I eat normally after bonding?
Yes, but it’s best to avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails to help prevent chipping.

Can bonding be repaired if it chips?
Usually, yes. Minor chips or wear can often be repaired without replacing the entire bonding.

Am I a good candidate for bonding?
Bonding works best for small cosmetic concerns such as chips, discoloration, uneven edges, or minor gaps. During your consultation, we’ll help determine if it’s the right option for your smile.
